Elizabeth                                                                                                                       Like that feeling that passes through us,
jarring, incongruous;
a shudder, a sudden chill,
an omen of good or ill?
An odd moment in an ordinary day
shrugged away…

One thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three…
counting the seconds of a moment’s oddity?
As if the sounds and flashes leave any doubt
a storm is growing within; it’s hazy and quiet without.

She startles me with her sharp, insistent cries.
She draws me into her fearless, commanding eyes –
I’m here for you, hear what I say –
the storm cannot be willed away today.

Someone is shouting No, No!
But, she won’t be denied…she forces me to go.
I seek a soft place, wherever that may be –
she will stay close, purring beside me.
This I know.

It’s time again for a veggie favorite to hit the restaurants, cafes, and open air markets all over Germany: white asparagus is in season. It’s called Spargelsaison (asparagus season) or Spargelzeit (asparagus time). Spargel, Spargel, Spargel – it is served in every conceivable form (Michael tried Spargel ice cream in Darmstadt; he said it was okay). Brought out the "haiku-ist" in me...
 Für Mutti,
Der Frühling ist da!
Der Spargel lässt Dunkelheit
die Sonne küssen.

Liebe, Laura (2012)

(Spring is here!
The asparagus leaves darkness
to kiss the sun.)

Did you know? White asparagus comes from the process of etiolation, the deprivation of light. Dirt is kept mounded around the emerging stalk so that the plant cannot produce the chlorophyll needed for greening.

In Schwetzingen, Germany,
the bronze monument above
commemorates the Spargelfrauen:
the women who rise early to harvest the plants and take to market.

As a side note to my blog on the Dresden Frauenkirche:
Prior to the Holidays, my mother mentioned how nice it would be to find an Advent Calendar of the Cathedral. Well, my Internet shopping prowess came through yet again! (I got one for myself as well.)

Years may pass, still the hymn rings true;
        sounding, resounding for the pass in review,
                answering the call, tried and true.

Magnificent in service, as civilians, as men;
steadfast time and time again.
Recalling the training, the duty, dedication;
Invaluable lessons – the Corps' foundation.

Love you, Laura

Young Girl Reading

Picture
I’m sure this wonderful painting is recognizable to many. Growing up, a print hung above my headboard. If I remember correctly, the frame was kind of elaborate. I asked my mom about it recently; maybe she still had it somewhere? Silly question - the poor girl went off with some neighbor at a yard sale (a long time ago).
